Living the dream of streets for people
We are thrilled to be part of a cool event that dreams up answers to the question, “What would streets be like if they were open to everything but cars?” This Sunday afternoon, Prairie Street will close to car traffic and open for fun. Expect music, swing dancing lessons, booths, bouncy houses, giant Jenga, and lots of cool “activations” on Prairie Street and Government Avenue from 71B to Walmart Neighborhood Market. Be sure to check out the SREG Lounge, a fully furnished living room and library at the intersection of West and Prairie, including selected reading material from Fayetteville Public Library.
Open Streets events take place in hundreds of cities across the continent. Also known as Living Streets or Sunday Streets, these events take all sorts of shapes, but the one thing they have in common is that they are free public events that invite people to reclaim a space usually reserved for cars.

According to the event producer, BikeNWA, “Open streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic, so that people may use them for just about any activity but driving— walking, jogging, bicycling, dancing, and social activities. We invite residents and community partners to reclaim their roadways and enjoy public spaces in creative and active ways.”
Open Streets Fayetteville is the first of a series of four Open Streets events across NWA, funded by a grant from Urban Land Institute – Northwest Arkansas. Each event is free, open ended, and full of surprises for people of all ages and abilities. All that’s missing is you!
